RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr. Jenson’s research encompasses applied as well as fundamental aspects of groundwater hydrology and related environmental science.  Current work on local groundwater resources includes numerical modeling of flow in the young carbonate aquifer of Guam and atolls of the adjacent Caroline Islands.  Recent local work includes a dye trace investigation of Guam’s island karst aquifer, culminating this year in an evaluation of the background fluorescence in Guam’s coastal waters.  Previous projects have included mapping the basement topography beneath the Northern Guam Lens Aquifer and evaluating trends in chloride concentration in Guam’s production wells.  For the past decade, Dr. Jenson has collaborated with Dr. John Mylroie of Mississippi State University to extend and apply the Carbonate Island Karst Model to the region’s tectonically active limestone-capped islands: Guam, Saipan, Tinian, and Rota in the Mariana Islands, and most recently, to Fais, the one raised limestone island in the Carolines.  Research on global-scale questions includes collaborative studies of the hydrology of the pseudo-karst aquifers at the base of continental ice sheets and the potential influence of saturated subglacial till on ice-sheet behavior.  Current work also includes coordinating an update of the 40-year-old geologic map of Guam.  Knowledge acquired on the caves and karst of the Mariana Islands has enabled a multi-disciplinary collaborative effort to evaluate the paleoclimate record from the western Pacific.

PROJECTS
Ongoing projects

  • Recharge of the Northern Guam Lens Aquifer (NGLA): Arne Olsen

Using a year-long (2004) record of 30-minute interval data from an NGLA observation well and a 2-D SUTRA model of the aquifer’s principal sub-basin, we are evaluating the dynamic response of the freshwater lens to recharge events.  This will soon be expanded to a 3-D model.  A preliminary technical report is forthcoming.  Expected completion date: July 2008.  (Funding source: Guam Hydrologic Survey)

  • Atoll groundwater modeling: Ryan Bailey

This project is centered around the development of a high-resolution 2-D SUTRA model of an idealized atoll aquifer, which will provide the basis for development of a simple algebraic model for application to water resource management in the Federated States of Micronesia.  Expected completion date: July 2008. (Funding source: US Geological Survey)

  • Soil Moisture Model for Evapo-transpiration and Recharge in Northern Guam: Nate Habana

The objective of this project is a more accurate model for evaluating water loss and infiltration through the soils on the Northern Guam Lens Aquifer (NGLA).  It will eventually include a routing routine to efficiently compute the delay times for percolation and fast flow through the 60 to 180-m thick vadose zone of the NGLA.  Expected completion: July 2008.  (Funding source: Guam Hydrologic Survey)

  • Evaluation of the Speleothem Paleoclimate Record of the Mariana Islands

Work is underway in collaboration with Dr. Jay Banner, University of Texas-Austin, to evaluate the quality of speleothems obtained from the Mariana Islands for documenting the paleoclimate of the western tropical Pacific Ocean.  Still in its early stages, initial results from uranium series dating and stable oxygen and carbon analyses have been promising. (Funding source: Guam Hydrologic Survey)

Recent projects

  • Background Fluorescence in Guam’s Groundwater S. Michelle Hoffman

Completed September 2007 (Hoffman, 2007), this project provided a comprehensive assessment of the background fluorescence in the groundwaters discharging into Guam’s coastal waters.  The results will facilitate better design and more accurate interpretation of dye trace studies on Guam and other coastal areas with similar aquifers and climate.  (see: WERI Technical Report 121) describes the project and the results. A manuscript is in preparation for publication.  (Funding source: Guam Hydrologic Survey)

  • Disturbed State Constitutive Modeling of Pleistocene Tills

Completed in July 2006 (Sane et al., 2007), this project applied the Disturbed State constitutive model of Desai (2001) to evaluate the rheological characteristics of two Pleistocene tills (Carlson et al., 2004) deposited by the Laurentide Ice Sheet, with the objective of eventually providing an improved constitutive law for ice sheet modeling.  A follow-on project has been proposed.  (Funding source: National Science Foundation)

  • Update of the Geologic Map of Guam

WERI will soon have available the first update of the geologic map of Guam since the original map (Tracey et al., 1964) was published over 40 years ago.  The map incorporates the results of more than two decades of fieldwork by Dr. Mark Reagan, University of Iowa, and Dr. Galt Siegrist (WERI professor emeritus) and their students to update the map, render it into GIS coverages, and expand it from 15-minute to 7.5-minute quadrangles.  Additional work is planned as funds become available.  (Funding source: Guam Hydrologic Survey)

  • Water Resources Study of Fais Island, Yap State, Federated States of Micronesia Robert S. MacCracken

Completed in February 2006 (MacCracken, 2006), this project undertook a comprehensive assessment of the water resource utilization by residents of Fais, and the potential of its groundwater resources for meeting emergency needs (see WERI Technical Report 111).  Results of a comprehensive survey of the island’s karst features and their implications for groundwater flow were presented at the 13th Symposium on the Geology of the Bahamas and Other Carbonate Regions, Gerace Research Centre, San Salvador Island, Bahamas (Mylroie, Mylroie, Jenson & MacCracken, 2006, in review).  (Funding source: US Geological Survey)

COURSES
  • Principles of Hydrogeology (EV 543, fall semester, odd-numbered years, 4 credit hours, with lab)

This course covers groundwater physics, geology, and chemistry, well hydraulics and aquifer evaluation, and the principles and techniques of groundwater modeling.  Each of these topics is examined in the context the Pacific island environment.

  • Pacific Island Geologic and Climatic History (EV 546, spring semester, each year, 3 credit hours)

Team taught by Dr. Jenson and WERI meteorologist, Dr. Mark Lander, this course addresses the geologic and climate histories that have created the unique environment of the Pacific Basin and shaped the environments of Pacific Islands.  It concludes with an examination of geologic and climatic hazards of concern to Pacific Island residents.

  • Global Warming: Science, Economics, and Politics (EV 591, fall semester, each year, 1 credit hour seminar)

Also team taught by Dr. Jenson and Dr. Lander, the purpose of this course is to introduce students to the more complex and subtle aspects of the global warming debate in order to provide them with the basis for informed participation in research and professional work in environmental and other natural sciences.

  • Hydrology:Geology Engineering (EV 511, spring semester, each year, 3 credit hours)

One of the core courses of the university’s Environmental Science Program, this course is a survey of the key aspects of geology and engineering with which environmental scientists should be familiar.  Team taught by the WERI faculty, topics include meteorology, surface hydrology, and groundwater hydrology.
